Erik Spoelstra did not hide his emotion over Bam Adebayo’s historic achievement, as he became the leading rebounder in Miami Heat history, surpassing Udonis Haslem in the 129-117 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.
Adebayo grabbed nine rebounds, bringing his career total to 5,794 and surpassing Haslem’s 5,791, who had held the record since November 2012.
“It was a truly special moment in the locker room,” said Spoelstra, visibly pleased for his team captain.
He then highlighted how Adebayo reached this milestone: “He absolutely deserves it. He achieved it with iron will and a work ethic that’s second to none.”
The Heat coach also emphasized the difficulty behind this record, noting: “We’re talking about a huge number of rebounds on the move, with contact, collisions, and battles in the paint.”
For Spoelstra, the moment holds even greater significance because of Adebayo’s special relationship with Haslem. “For him to pull it off and break his brother UD’s record is truly a very special moment,” he added.
Haslem was the Heat’s captain and a cornerstone of the team for years, and after his departure, that role passed to Adebayo. Now, the 29-year-old center has surpassed him in one of the most important statistical categories in the franchise’s history.
Adebayo is already second on the Heat’s all-time scoring list behind Dwyane Wade; he ranks third in assists and steals and fifth in blocks, continuously solidifying his place among the most important figures in the team’s history.
“I entered this league simply wanting to leave my mark,” Adebayo said. “Surpassing the people who have been with me on this journey makes me thank God and appreciate even more those who have stood by my side.”
