Averoff’s “pellares” and the magic wand for introversion: What pamporidis’s vision for the 2028 presidential election entails

The DISY lawmaker made some pointed remarks about his opponent

With clear jabs at his rival, Averof Neophytou, during the Democratic Alarm party’s internal nomination process for the 2028 presidential election, party MP George Pamporidis responded regarding the proposal to lift European sanctions against Russia. Describing some of the statements made by key figures in the election process as “nonsense,” he asked those attending the press conference he held at a hotel in Nicosia to show understanding for Mr. Neophytou’s remarks, as he believes Neophytou does not mean what he said.

“Of course, I do not agree with these proposals that were put forward. They are contrary to the principles of Democratic Alarm, contrary to the principles of the European People’s Party, and contrary to the principles of any European institution. However, I would ask you to show a little understanding, because during elections we say things that may sometimes not have the desired effect. Show a little understanding. I don’t think Mr. Neophytou meant what he said.”

Under the slogan “Let’s Talk About the Essentials,” Mr. Pamborides presented his vision, positions, and proposals in the event that he becomes Pindarou’s chosen candidate for the presidential race, expressing his confidence that he has what it takes to advance to the second round. He also claimed to possess the much-talked-about “magic wand” to put an end to the party’s internal divisions and revealed that in 2023 he did not support Averof Neophytou’s candidacy, believing that this is one of the reasons why they are now rivals in the internal party process.

Substance, Not Image

When asked about the way in which Averof Neophytou submitted his candidacy, with supporters by his side, Mr. Pamborides distinguished his own approach, arguing that he focuses on substance rather than image.

On the internal party front, he stated that he possesses the “magic wand” to address the introversion plaguing DISY following the 2023 elections, calling on party members to choose a different path. At the same time, he assured that, if he receives the nomination, DISY will advance to the second round of the 2028 presidential election, in an effort to allay concerns about the party’s future.

No comment on Haris

George Pamporidis was asked to comment on Haris Georgiadis’s letter and his resignation from the leadership of the “Glafkos Clerides,” in front of Anita Dimitriou. Without taking a specific position on whether these developments affect internal party processes, Mr. Pamboridis emphasized the need for DISY to move forward united, while making it clear that Mr. Georgiadis did not influence his decision to seek the nomination.

As he noted, the only scenario in which he would not enter the race would be if a consensus candidate were put forward by the party’s president, Annita Dimitriou. Following recent developments and Averof Neophytou’s entry into the race, he decided to proceed with his own candidacy.

Constitutional Changes, Fiscal Discipline, and NATO

The central focus of his proposals is the modernization of the state through constitutional changes, to the extent that this is legally feasible. The goal, as he stated, is to facilitate substantive reforms and improve the functioning of institutions. On the economy, he prioritized addressing inflation and the rising cost of living, while on education, he emphasized the need to upgrade public education and curb private tutoring.

On the Cyprus issue, he expressed support for a bizonal, bicommunal federation, noting the need for a clear direction and better public information. He also referred to the General Healthcare System (GESY), calling for measures to address instances of abuse of the system. At the same time, he argued that Cyprus should seek membership in NATO.

“Yes” to the Media

Mr. Pamborides took a positive stance toward engaging with the media, stating that he is willing to present his views, in contrast to Averof Neophytou’s choice to prioritize direct contact with the party’s grassroots. His message to DISY members was clear: to move beyond introversion and division, with the goal of a united party that will run for the Presidency of the Republic in 2028.
