“Better every year”: Satisfaction for some, concern for others on the first hunting trip

Reports of a decline in game populations
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Today marked the first day of the hunting season for native game, with some of the hunters traveling from the free area of Famagusta all the way to Paphos to indulge in their favorite pastime and express satisfaction with the results, while others were concerned about the decline in game populations.

The hunters took advantage of the good weather and set out to hunt partridge, quail, and hare, with initial impressions varying by region.

Andreas Tsangaris, a hunter from Avgorou, reported that his group traveled from Kokkinochoria and had a successful first outing. As he said, they managed to bag six partridges and three francolins.

For his part, Mr. Anastasis, also a hunter, said he was satisfied with the first day, noting that they did well this year. As he mentioned, the weather was on their side and allowed them to enjoy the hunt. He added that hunting is their hobby, emphasizing that what matters is practicing it with care and responsibility.

Andreas Krotalias, from Giolos—a folk poet and hunter for many years—appeared more concerned about the state of the game.

As he noted, November 1 marks the start of the hunting season for hares and partridges; however, the scene he encountered in the area where he was hunting was not what he had expected.

“It gets better every year,” was his characteristic remark, clarifying that he cannot generalize this observation to all areas, but is speaking exclusively about the place where he went hunting.

As he explained, that particular area was once the region’s “partridge paradise,” as partridges were countless there. Today, however, the situation is different, and he expressed concern about the gradual decline in the partridge population.

Mr. Krotalias reported that during this year’s first hunting trip, he managed to bag two partridges.

He also made special mention of the number of hunters visiting the Paphos district. As he explained, the area welcomes a large number of hunters each year from Kokkinochoria and Limassol, while, based on his personal experience, one rarely encounters a hunter from Paphos itself.

The first hunting season for native game once again brought hunters closer to nature and their beloved pastime this year. At the same time, however, reports of a decline in the bird population have once again brought to the forefront concerns about the state of its populations and the need to protect them.
