Five individuals were placed in eight-day pretrial detention pursuant to a court order for the purpose of investigating a case involving the facilitation of illegal entry, transit, and stay in the Republic. The five individuals, aged 27, 26, 22, 20, and 19, were arrested by police officers last night in the Morphou area.
The five individuals were located by members of the Green Line Surveillance Sub-Directorate shortly after 11:00 p.m. during a patrol check in the Astromeritis – Peristerona. The police officers signaled the driver of the car in which the five individuals were traveling to pull over for a check, but the driver accelerated, attempting to flee.
The police officers pursued and stopped the vehicle and conducted a check on the 19-year-old driver, as well as the 27-year-old, 26-year-old, 20-year-old, and 22-year-old woman who were in the vehicle. Subsequent investigations revealed that the four passengers in the vehicle were in the Republic illegally, and testimony emerged indicating that they had entered the free areas from the occupied territories shortly before being located by members of the Green Line Surveillance Sub-Directorate.
The five individuals were arrested for offenses committed in flagrante delicto, and during the course of police investigations, they were also arrested pursuant to court warrants. This morning, they appeared before the Nicosia District Court, which granted the police’s request and issued an order for their eight-day detention, for the purposes of police investigations.
The Morphou Criminal Investigation Department is continuing the investigation.
