The son of the 68-year-old man found dead in Serres will appear before a prosecutor and an investigating judge; he was arrested on Tuesday night on charges of murdering his father.
According to ERT, the 36-year-old insists he is innocent, a claim he has made repeatedly in the past. In fact, he had spoken on public television, emphasizing that he would go after anyone who writes articles incriminating him.
The 68-year-old’s son was arrested around 9:00 p.m. and taken into custody. The arrest warrant was issued after the case file was compiled and sent to the prosecutor and the investigating judge.
What the forensic examination revealed—He allegedly killed him with a hammer
The 68-year-old lived on the ground floor of an apartment building in Serres, where his son found him dead on August 1 when he went to visit him, as he lived in another home. The apartment was in disarray, with initial reports attributing the unfortunate man’s death to natural causes.
However, the findings of the medical examiner’s report overturned the initial theory, as it was determined that the 68-year-old’s death resulted from a criminal act, with the medical examiner documenting multiple abdominal injuries caused by a blunt object, most likely a hammer.
Reports of arguments placed the 68-year-old’s son in the crosshairs of the investigation from day one
Police placed the son under investigation from the very first day, as neighbors had heard arguments between him and his father. He himself had admitted to Ertnews that there had been conflicts and that his father had previously reported him for domestic violence, adding that he loved him.
In his initial statements and testimonies, he claimed that his father had withdrawn money from the bank a few days earlier and that new neighbors had broken into the house, robbed him, and killed him.
The 36-year-old’s conflicting statements and the surveillance footage
The conflicting statements and testimonies given by the 68-year-old man’s son—both to the authorities and to the media—regarding how he found the house, how he entered it, and how he found his father. Police reportedly found him in a manner different from the one he himself described.
In addition, the authorities also collected video footage from cameras located behind the Serres Public Central Library. As reported, the cameras show only him entering the house. Neighbors say they had seen him enter earlier, while he himself had said that on Thursday—two days before his father was found dead—he had gone home around 2:00 a.m.
In fact, the 36-year-old had claimed that everyone was avoiding him because they believed he had killed his father, and he said he felt uncomfortable going out in public.
