The Nicosia District Local Government Organization (EOA) has begun installing 72,000 smart water meters, with the aim of digitally modernizing water services and reducing water losses, has been launched by the Nicosia District Local Government Organization (EOA), with the first phase of the project beginning in Zone 9 in Engomi.

According to an announcement by the Authority, work began on November 2 and will gradually expand to Latsia, in Zone 21, as well as to Lakatamia, in Zones 40 and 41.

The new water meters, according to the EOA, utilize ultrasonic technology and transmit consumption data daily via the NB-IoT network to the EOA’s online platform, eliminating the need for manual recording. At the same time, they make it possible to detect unusual changes in consumption, which may indicate leaks, about which consumers will be notified via email or text message.

The Nicosia Water Authority urges consumers to switch to digital water billing and register on the Authority’s online portal, so they can receive relevant updates and monitor their property’s water consumption remotely. Registration requires the consumer or water meter number and a cell phone number.

As noted, the supply of smart water meters was awarded to Cyta under a contract signed on April 29, 2026. The project is being implemented as part of the “Thalεια 2021–2027” Cohesion Policy Program, with co-funding from the European Union.

The announcement concludes by noting that interested parties can stay informed about the progress of the work and view the site plan on the NEA Nicosia website at ndlgo.org.cy/smartmeters/.
