Russian barrage on Kyiv with 172 drones and 36 missiles

Energy infrastructure and a bridge over the dnieper are in the crosshairs

Overnight, Russian forces launched attacks using missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and the surrounding areas, causing damage to energy infrastructure and a major bridge over the Dnieper River, officials announced today.

“Russia used 172 drones and 36 ballistic missiles, with all the missiles targeting Kyiv and the surrounding areas,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Explosions rocked the city as Russia launched waves of ballistic missile attacks, with some of them striking the North Bridge, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. He described the situation as “extremely difficult” in terms of electricity supply, heating, and water supply in Kyiv, where temperatures this morning were extremely low. Governor Timur Tkachenko stated that energy infrastructure had been hit in at least three areas in the Kyiv region.

One person was killed and eight others, including a child, were injured in the nighttime attack, which also caused damage to homes and other buildings, according to authorities.

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that it carried out massive strikes on targets in Ukraine’s military-industrial sector, as it described them, as well as energy and transportation infrastructure within Kyiv and around the city.

Russia has intensified its airstrikes against Ukraine while its ground operation has largely stalled, striking energy infrastructure in major cities with missiles and drones nearly five years after the invasion began.

In recent weeks, it has expanded its campaign by targeting bridges in Kyiv and causing traffic disruptions in the city, home to more than 3 million people.

Today’s strikes also caused damage to energy infrastructure in the Zhytomyr region, in the central part of the country, according to the regional governor and the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Talks in Abu Dhabi

These strikes come a few days before a new round of trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi between Ukrainian and Russian officials, as part of the U.S.-backed peace effort that has so far failed to yield significant results.

The Russian delegation to the talks with the U.S. and Ukraine next week will include Kremlin adviser Vladimir Medinsky as well as Deputy Foreign Ministers Sergey Ryabkov and Mikhail Galuzin, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Interfax news agency. The delegation will also include Igor Kostyukov, head of Russia’s military intelligence service, and Yuri Zigarlovsky, a high-ranking officer of the General Staff, along with other high-ranking diplomatic and military officials, Peskov added. The trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi is scheduled for November 10–11.
