Allergies: A new test detects up to 300 different allergens

By Dr. Stefanos Pavlidis*

A 34-year-old woman is visiting her doctor for the third time in a year. She suffers from chronic rhinitis, irritated eyes, and, from time to time, skin reactions. She has undergone two different allergy tests in the past, with conflicting results, and she still doesn’t know what to avoid—neither does her doctor. This scenario is not uncommon. On the contrary, it is the reality for millions of people worldwide.

Allergies are one of the fastest-growing chronic conditions globally, affecting more than one billion people. Their prevalence has been steadily increasing over the past few decades, and experts estimate that this trend will continue due to environmental factors, climate change, and modern lifestyles. The problem is not only medical but also, to a large extent, diagnostic: without accurately identifying the responsible allergen, treatment becomes a matter of guesswork.

This is precisely where the new generation of laboratory testing comes in. With ALEX³ Allergy Explorer, it is now possible to comprehensively map an allergic profile with a single blood draw, simultaneously detecting up to 300 allergens, 218 of which are identified at the molecular level. The panel covers animal dander, pollen, dust mites, fungi, foods (dairy, eggs, fish, shellfish, nuts, fruits, vegetables), insect venoms, and latex, while also measuring total IgE. The test requires no special preparation, has no age or medical history restrictions, and results are available in about three days.

The real advantage of ALEX³ lies in the logic behind it. By combining traditional allergen extracts with molecular allergology, the test follows four steps that fundamentally change the clinical picture:

1. It identifies true sensitization. Not whether the immune system simply “reacts,” but to which specific molecule.

2. It distinguishes between cross-reactions. A person who is allergic to birch pollen may test positive for almonds or apples. Not because they are actually allergic to these foods, but because they share similar proteins (panallergens). ALEX³ distinguishes between them.

3. It assesses the risk of a severe reaction (risk stratification)—a critical factor, especially in food allergies.

4. It guides the selection of immunotherapy, ensuring that treatment is personalized rather than empirical.

The result is fewer false-positive results, fewer unnecessary dietary restrictions, and, most importantly, a more targeted treatment strategy. The development of ALEX³ was based on experience from more than one million tests conducted in over 90 countries, and it continuously incorporates new, internationally recognized allergens—from freshwater shrimp to new pet allergens.

For the woman in the example, such a test would mean an end to uncertainty: one test, clear answers, a clear path to treatment. This is the essence of prevention—not fear of the unknown, but precise knowledge that leads to targeted action.

For people with chronic symptoms and no clear diagnosis, discussing the ALEX³ Allergy Explorer with their doctor may be the next step

Knowledge is not fear. It is power.
