Visa (NYSE: V) announced the launch of the Visa Threat Intelligence Platform (VTIP), a new solution that helps financial institutions identify and address cyber threats in a timely manner that could lead to fraud and financial losses, by leveraging the same advanced technologies and cybersecurity capabilities that Visa uses to protect its own global network.
Fraud is often considered a consequence of prior cyberattacks, which begin with data breaches, credential theft, or system exploitation long before a transaction takes place. These cyberattacks, which expose payment information, can originate from anywhere within the payments ecosystem, from merchants and card issuers to payment acquirers, and payment processing and service providers. In some cases, compromised data is trafficked illegally and later misused, which can lead to financial losses and operational disruptions.
“Fraud is often the result of cyberattacks that are not detected in a timely manner,” said Michalis Ioannidis, Visa’s Country Manager in Cyprus. “With the Visa Threat Intelligence Platform, we help financial institutions identify risks early and respond more effectively before they escalate into fraud or financial losses. By combining cybersecurity and payment data, we enable our clients to protect their customers more effectively, limit the damaging impact of fraud, and strengthen trust in digital payments.”
Leveraging Visa’s global cybersecurity capabilities
Today, Visa thwarts approximately 90 million cyberattacks and 11 million phishing emails every month, across more than 200 countries, with the goal of zero breaches and zero outages.
VTIP was developed by Visa’s cyber defense teams and extensively tested on its global payment network, in order to provide its customers with the same expertise used to protect one of the world’s largest payment platforms. Thus, acting as its own first customer, Visa validated VTIP against real-world attacks before making this solution available to the broader ecosystem, helping it stay one step ahead of emerging threats.
Specialized Insights for Financial Institutions
VTIP is designed specifically for the financial sector, helping security, fraud prevention, and risk management teams to evaluate data more effectively and focus on information directly related to fraud risk.
The platform’s capabilities include:
- Threat Intelligence: Detection of malware and indicators of compromise tailored to the financial sector
- Vulnerability Intelligence: Identification of vulnerabilities and exploitation attempts relevant to each organization
- Brand Intelligence: Detection and response to incidents of impersonation and trademark abuse
- Digital Identity Intelligence: Protecting executives and employees from targeted personal attacks
- Financial Intelligence: Identifying compromised payment data from the dark web and correlating it with VisaNet data, transforming it into actionable intelligence for fraud and risk management teams
By combining this information, VTIP helps financial institutions identify and assess threats in a timely manner, prioritize mitigation actions more effectively, and reduce the likelihood of cyberattacks escalating into fraud incidents.
