A cemetery is being built on a riverbed in Pegeia: How Marinos Lambrou responds to the allegations

Residents are concerned
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The expansion of a cemetery into riverbeds is causing concern among residents of Pegeia.

As reported on the Alpha Kalimera show by Alpha’s Paphos correspondent, Kostas Nanos, there has been a need to expand the cemetery for years, due to population growth and the fact that many foreigners have chosen to live in Cyprus after retirement.

The plot was purchased by the municipality, however, according to our correspondent, this particular plot is located at the confluence of two rivers, and residents have expressed fears that if it rains and the river floods, nothing will remain in place.

Burials on this specific plot have already begun, even as construction work is underway.

Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou, speaking on the Alpha Kalimera program, explained that this is an expansion of an existing cemetery and that the Water Department’s opinions regarding this specific plot have been taken into account.

“It is a large plot located in a residential area with a higher building density; it is not a river. We have received the Water Department’s input, but we must note that the substructure has not yet been completed; we have started the construction work,”

He added that this is not an active river. “It is only stormwater runoff from these plots.”

He also noted that it was used in the past, but there is no access to it, and it does not connect to any other river. Measures have been taken, under the guidance of the Water Department, and are currently underway.
