Today’s attempted femicide is not an isolated incident of violence against women; but yet another tragic reminder that gender-based violence continues to be one of the most extreme manifestations of the historically unequal power relations between women and men, says Gender Equality Commissioner Jozy Christodoulou in a written statement regarding the attempted assault that took place on Tuesday morning in Limassol.
“From what has come to light so far, it is abundantly clear that notions of control, domination, and ownership over women continue to exist and, in their most extreme forms, lead to attempted femicides and femicides.”

“Women are not anyone’s property, nor are they objects to be controlled,” Ms. Christodoulou states emphatically, stressing that they are equal members of society and should not have to fear for their lives.
“Gender-based violence is neither a private matter nor a ‘family issue.’ It is a serious violation of women’s human rights and a blow to society and democracy. It concerns us all. Whenever a woman is in danger simply because she is a woman, effective prevention and protection are essential.”
“At the same time, in such cases, public discourse must remain respectful and sensitive,” she adds.
Finally, she expresses her support for the woman fighting for her life and for her loved ones. “Our thoughts are with her, and we hope she emerges victorious from this battle,” she concludes.
