The 44-year-old man, who was posing as a police officer and demanding money from citizens—and even managed to deceive some of them—ended up in handcuffs.
The suspect, using various pretexts—including the alleged payment or settlement of out-of-court fines— managed to gain the complainants’ trust and extract money from them.
In all cases, he wore a T-shirt bearing the Police logo, and the victims appear to have been primarily elderly individuals. In one case, the amount was 50 euros; in another, 10 euros. The two cases occurred in Kalo Chorio, Larnaca, and the other two cases took place in Nicosia.
Authorities obtained footage from closed-circuit surveillance cameras, which helped identify the 44-year-old.
Earlier, while he was still a fugitive, the 44-year-old had posted a video on his personal social media account, giving his own version of the events the victims allegedly attributed to him. He attributed the arrest warrant against him to an act of retaliation by someone named “Mr. D…o.”
He also stated that he was determined to turn himself in to the police, saying that his main concern was the care of two animals he was fostering, for which he was trying to find a place for them to be taken in.
So far, it remains unclear whether the 44-year-old ultimately turned himself in voluntarily at the police station or was located by the police.
