Evenings Under the Stars: Where to Go to Enjoy the Spectacular Perseids

When does the phenomenon that August brings us reach its peak?
ALPHANEWSLIVE

August nights become even more special when the sky is lit up by the Perseids. Whether you’re by the sea or in the mountains, this spectacular sight offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the magic of the summer sky.

What are the Perseids?

The Perseids take their name from the constellation Perseus, as the point from which the shooting stars appear to originate lies in its direction. In reality, they are small particles left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which, as they enter Earth’s atmosphere, create the spectacular phenomenon of “shooting stars.”

This year’s Perseid meteor shower began on July 17, 2026, and will end on August 24, 2026, with the best viewing dates being August 12 and 13, 2026, when the highest density of meteors will be observed.

Where can you enjoy the Perseid meteor shower?

Alphanews.Live reached out to photographer Manos Manolis, asking for his help in guiding us to special spots on the island where we could enjoy the magic of the August sky while getting closer to nature.

He explained that to see the Perseids, we need to be in a place with little or no light pollution—that is, far from any lights. He also mentioned the four best-known spots where you can enjoy the Perseids.

  1. Troodos Square
  2. Troodos Botanical Garden
  3. Pissouri, Limassol District
  4. Petra tou Romiou, Paphos District

Events for Observing the Perseids

To mark the Perseid meteor shower, the Cyprus Astronomical Society (ASTREK), the Cyprus Space Exploration Organization (CSEO), and the Faka Tutorials Observatory, in collaboration with the Kyperounta Community Council, are organizing an astronomy night in the courtyard of the Church of Saint Arsenios in Kyperounta on August 12, 2026, from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., and invite all interested parties to attend.

Prodromos Dam—Larnaca Photography Club

The Larnaca Photography Club is organizing its annual Perseid meteor shower viewing event for 2026, on August 12, offering enthusiasts of astrophotography and stargazing the opportunity to enjoy a unique celestial spectacle. With ideal conditions due to the absence of the moon, participants will be able to observe and photograph the meteors, with the support of Club members.

Nightsky Explorers Club—Amiantos Astro Park

The Nightsky Explorers Club is organizing a stargazing event for the 2026 Perseids, on Wednesday, August 12, at Amiantos Astro Park at 8:00 p.m., with free admission. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the meteor shower, observe the night sky through telescopes, and enjoy a unique experience in nature.

Troodos Observatory

On August 12, 2026, the Troodos Observatory is organizing a special evening dedicated to the Perseids, offering the public free sky tours, telescope observations, and a screening of the documentary “Troodos: Rising to the Stars.” Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy this spectacular celestial phenomenon in a unique setting, while optional sessions with the Observatory’s large telescope will be available by reservation.
