Business Reinvention and Human Resources

Fulfilling business expectations through a workforce that is ready for the future

Today, human capital is increasingly becoming the most critical factor in the success of business reinvention and organizational transformation. At the same time, Human Resources (HR) functions are called upon to take on a leading role as catalysts and accelerators of transformation.

Recent findings from various PwC studies highlight a clear message: in an economy shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI), HR must reposition itself as a key driver of transformation, focusing on skills development, modernizing the operational model, and the responsible use of AI.

Reality Through the Eyes of CEOs

PwC’s 27th Annual Global CEO Survey highlights two critical findings related to human capital:

  • Maintaining the relevance and effectiveness of the workforce is both the greatest challenge and the most important factor for success.
  • The skills of the future, people’s flexibility, and a strong organizational culture are now the decisive factors in the success of transformation, acting either as obstacles or as powerful accelerators, depending on how they are managed.

Simply put, digital transformation and human capital are at the heart of business reinvention.

CEOs are increasingly viewing the adoption of digital transformation not merely as a technological upgrade, but as a redesign of their business model itself. This requires fundamental changes in roles, skills, and the way work is done.

In this environment, HR can no longer function solely in a support role. It must help the organization’s leadership answer critical questions such as how to attract and develop the right people with the right skills, how to leverage technology in a way that creates real business value, and how to design more efficient and effective processes.

How HR Must Respond

To become a true driver of transformation, HR must take the lead in two strategic areas of particular importance:

1. Understanding the evolution of roles and skills

HR must shift from traditional staffing management to a “workforce architecture” approach. This means redesigning roles and processes based on what can be automated and where human involvement remains critical to value creation, innovation, and the customer experience.

At the same time, HR needs a more outward-looking approach, keeping pace with industry developments and technological changes, in order to better align the workforce with the company’s strategic priorities.

2. Responsible Integration of Artificial Intelligence

Leveraging AI in a way that generates tangible benefits for the business requires a collective effort. The strategy, principles, and approach must be developed holistically and in collaboration with the organization’s leadership, legal departments, risk management, and technology functions.

In this context, HR emerges as a strategic partner in driving change, with the responsibility of aligning decisions regarding Artificial Intelligence with people’s needs, the skills of the future, and the redefinition of job roles.

What HR Needs to Do

As Artificial Intelligence moves from the experimental stage to everyday application, HR faces a critical choice: either to maintain its traditional, supportive role, or to take on the task of designing a workforce and an operational model capable of supporting growth, competitiveness, and the creation of sustainable business value.
