Europe is redesigning its banknotes and inviting European citizens to choose from ten design proposals to decide what they will look like.
This is the first complete redesign of euro banknotes since their introduction in 2002, and each of us can share our opinion through an online survey conducted by the European Central Bank until September 21.by the European Central Bank.
The 10 proposals are based on two themes: European Culture and Rivers and Birds. The banknote designs, which were selected through a Europe-wide competition involving more than 1,200 graphic designers, feature prominent figures. Maria Callas on the 5-euro note, the renowned composer Beethoven on the 10-euro note, Polish physicist and two-time Nobel laureate Marie Curie on the 20-euro note; the 50-euro note features Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes; the Italian Renaissance painter Leonardo da Vinci on the 100-euro note, and the Austrian author Bertha von Suttner, the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, on the 200-euro banknote.
There is no design for the 500-euro banknote due to its definitive and phased phase-out. The decision will be made by the Governing Council of the European Central Bank at the end of this year; however, the previous banknotes will retain their value and continue to circulate alongside the new series.
