Provisional duties of €3 per product category for all online purchases up to €150 from third countries took effect today, July 1. However, many questions regarding the payment process remain unanswered.
Speaking on the “Alpha Kalimera” program, Marios Drousiotis, President of the Consumers’ Association, stated that if a consumer placed an order before July 1 and it was accepted by the platforms, then even if the package arrives on July 15, they will not be liable for the tax.
The major problem for consumers, as he explained, is that they do not know where, when, or how the provisional tax will be paid. He noted that, if consumers have to go to customs offices to make the payment, there will be considerable inconvenience due to long wait times in line.
According to Mr. Drousiotis’s statements, the possibility of consumers paying duties online is being considered. However, as he explained, in order to make the payment online, consumers must first register on the government platform.
“Some people won’t be able to do it online and will need to ask others for help.”
Another question that, according to him, remains unanswered is when the payment will be made.
“If it’s done online, will the package be delayed until we pay, or will the package arrive and we’ll owe the customs authorities?”
