"He won't stop talking," claimed the man from Thessaloniki

A man who beat his partner in their apartment in Thessaloniki and then asked her for… change because, as he said, “she was complaining.”

The unbelievable incident took place last Thursday night, when the couple returned home and the woman discovered that some money she had set aside for her personal needs was missing.

“She admitted that she took it, but she never asked me for permission to take that money, which was mine,” he testified.

From that moment on, a major argument ensued, culminating in the 45-year-old woman being beaten.

“He was yelling that he’d do whatever he wanted, and I was explaining to him that I carry the entire burden of the household with the grocery shopping and all the other necessities. I started yelling back, and then he came at me and hit me on the head with his hands,” she said.

Later in her testimony, the woman explained to the Thessaloniki Single-Judge Misdemeanor Court, where the case was heard, that the blows she received were mainly to her head and the back of her neck, a kick to the knee, as well as blows that caused bruises on her arms, and at one point he even knocked her out of her chair.

“I started screaming, and he kicked me when I went into the bedroom to get my cell phone; he hit me on the shoulder so it would fall,” she continued, adding that in all the years they have been together, this is the first time the defendant has been violent and aggressive toward her, and that she now wants to leave the house because she fears for her life.

“He won’t stop talking”

Beginning his defense, the defendant said, “I’m living a nightmare” and attempted to portray himself as the victim, claiming that the 45-year-old was the one who kept him… in their relationship and wouldn’t let him leave the apartment every time he packed his things.

Regarding the incident in question and what followed, he claimed: “I pushed her, but I didn’t hit her hard. She went out onto the balcony and was screaming. She was cursing at me. I say something once, and she talks nonstop, from morning till night, and she doesn’t stop for any reason.”

In fact, as he concluded his defense, he said—indignantly—that “Women are always the good ones and men are always the bad ones, of course,” while he seemed puzzled when he heard he would be convicted for hitting his partner.

Ultimately, the court found him guilty of domestic assault and sentenced him to one year in prison, suspended for three years. In addition, he was ordered to move out of their shared home.
