A lesson in humanity and solidarity, born of the deepest pain of losing a loved one, unfolded in the early hours of Thursday (October 8) at the General Hospital of Lamia.

The 36-year-old nurse from Lamia had been fighting for her life for days after suffering a ruptured aneurysm. Despite the superhuman efforts of the doctors and nurses at the General Hospital of Lamia, her condition unfortunately proved irreversible, and she was ultimately declared brain dead in the Intensive Care Unit where she was being treated.

The 36-year-old’s mother decided to donate her daughter’s organs, and a large-scale operation and “bridge of life” were immediately organized with the participation of medical teams from five different hospitals. Her heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and corneas were harvested, according to lamiareport.gr.

The official announcement from Panagiotis Lachlali, the hospital’s director:

“Today, October 8, 2026, organ donation for transplantation took place once again at Lamia General Hospital, from a fellow human being who was being treated in the ICU.

The transplant procedure began shortly after 4:00 a.m. and concluded with the retrieval of the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and corneas in the operating room of our hospital by five (5) specialized organ and tissue procurement and transplantation teams who arrived from Turin, Italy, the Onassis and Evangelismos Hospitals in Athens, the Hippocrates and Papageorgiou Hospitals in Thessaloniki, in close collaboration with our hospital’s medical and nursing teams (ICU, Anesthesiology Department, ICU and Operating Room nursing staff).

The collaboration and coordinated efforts of all involved parties (Local Transplant Coordinator, EOM, Lamia General Hospital, 5th Regional Health Authority of Thessaly & Central Greece, EKAV, and the Ministry of Health), guided by respect for the donor and hope for the recipients’ lives, stands as a remarkable example of humanity and medical excellence.

The Administration of the General Hospital of Lamia expresses its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased donor and its boundless gratitude for their decision, despite their grief, to give their consent for the donation to take place, thereby transforming their loss into a precious gift of life.

May they serve as an example and a role model for everyone.”
