South African lawyer Navanethem “Navi” Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, as announced today (October 9) by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, in recognition of her many years of work in promoting peace, defending human rights, and strengthening international law.

According to the Committee’s citation, Pillay has demonstrated “exceptional courage and integrity,” contributing to the development of a more comprehensive global legal order.

Special mention is made of her decisive role in the prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

Who is Navanethem Pillay?

Pillay was born in Durban, South Africa, to a family of Indian descent, during the apartheid era.

From the early years of her career as a lawyer, she faced racial discrimination and social exclusion, taking on the defense of Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists.

She then embarked on a long career in international justice, serving as a judge on the Supreme Court of South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the International Criminal Court.

She also served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and until recently chaired the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

As noted in the announcement, Pillay played a significant role in landmark decisions of the international judiciary. Among these, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda’s recognition that rape and sexual violence can constitute crimes against humanity, as well as acts of genocide, stands out.

“Peace requires justice”

The Norwegian Nobel Committee links this year’s award to the growing pressures on international law, at a time when armed conflicts are multiplying and international institutions are being challenged.

“Whenever power prevails over law, stability, trust, and peaceful coexistence are undermined,” the statement notes.

The Commission emphasizes that international law is no longer merely a supplementary means of maintaining peace, but an absolute necessity.

“Peace requires justice,” it emphasizes, explaining that the awarding of the prize to Pillay also sends a message in support of the protection of international judicial institutions and the accountability of states and political leaders.

In conclusion, the Committee describes Navi Pillay as one of the most important defenders of international law of our time, noting that her commitment to justice and human dignity is a source of hope for a more peaceful world.
