The head of the military intelligence service of the Libyan National Army (LNA), which controls eastern and parts of southern Libya, was killed in a car bomb attack, the army announced on Tuesday.

Fawzi al-Mansouri was assassinated on Monday when explosives planted in his car detonated as he was leaving a local mosque in the evening, according to the statement.

According to reports, the assassination took place in the city of Benghazi in eastern Libya.

Libya remains divided since the outbreak of war following the overthrow of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Two governments are currently vying for power: the UN-recognized government in Tripoli, led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeiba, and a rival government in Benghazi, backed by military commander and LNA leader Khalifa Haftar.

Khaled Haftar, Khalifa’s son, told Agence France-Presse that an investigation has been launched, adding that “the evidence points to a despicable terrorist tactic.”

“Terrorism is a scheme that targets the entire region, not just Libya,” he noted.

The bombing was a blow to the Haftar family’s efforts to project an image of stability in the areas under its control.
