A dramatic rescue amid utter devastation was documented in Nepal, where a 64-year-old woman was found alive 11 days after the deadly floods that swept through the Botekoshi River region.
Chandika Shrestha was found trapped on the fourth floor of a four-story house in the Betrawati area of Nuwakot District, which had been almost completely covered by mud, rocks, and debris following the torrential flood.
Search and rescue teams operating in the area heard faint voices coming from inside the destroyed building. The rescuers halted their work with heavy machinery and began carefully clearing away the debris until they managed to open a passage in the wall and free her.

She had been trapped in the mud for nearly two weeks
Her house had been swept away and then buried under massive amounts of mud. The woman remained trapped on the upper floor, while much of the building had been destroyed.
Her rescue moved the nation, as it was considered unlikely that anyone would be found alive so many days after the disaster.
After she was freed, she was immediately given water and first aid, and was then transported by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu for further treatment.
A glimmer of hope amid a national tragedy
The rescue of the 64-year-old woman came at a time when Nepal is still reeling from one of the worst natural disasters in recent years.
The floods caused by a glacier collapse and extreme runoff in the Botekoshi and Trisuli rivers left hundreds dead and thousands missing.
The story of Tsantika Shresta offers a rare message of hope for families still waiting for news of their loved ones, as search and rescue operations continue in the affected areas.
