European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen today denounced a “hybrid war” campaign against the European Union, following the downing of a maritime drone by a Romanian fighter jet.
“An escalating campaign of threats is underway, which is alarming our citizens and aims to divide our Union,” he said, warning that the EU must step up its defense efforts in order to “prevent provocations and attacks.”
It should be noted that a Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down a maritime drone today just a few hundred meters from the Neptum Deep natural gas facility in the Black Sea, in the latest such incident to date in the NATO member country, said the country’s Defense Minister, Radu Miruta.
Romania, also a NATO member, shares a 614-kilometer land border with Ukraine and has seen Russian drones violate its airspace over the past four years and mines floating in the Black Seaalong key trade and energy routes.
Today’s incident follows a similar action earlier this month when military divers destroyed two Gerbera-type drones in the exclusive economic zone near the Neptune Deep offshore platform.
The Romanian Minister of Defense did not specify the drone’s origin but said that Ukraine had confirmed it was not Ukrainian.
