The response that the issues raised by theregarding the obstruction of music festivals and the Barcelona soccer camp, as well as concerns about their impact on the United Nations process, the Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman stated that he had received a response from the EU.
A statement from the “presidency” states that Tufan Erhurman announced last night that he had received a response yesterday to the letters he had sent on August 28 to the relevant parties, primarily the UN and the EU, regarding the “escalating actions of the Greek Cypriot leadership that undermine trust”—such as the two mentioned above—and, on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot side, drew attention “the negative atmosphere created by these activities.”
In his letter, Mr. Erhurman adds, he also noted the timing of these events. And in the reply, he continues, the UN Secretary-General’s recent visit to the island is recalled, emphasizing that building trust and fostering a positive atmosphere between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots is important for creating a suitable environment.
Furthermore, the reply letter states—according to Mr. Erhurman—that the European Commission’s goal is to build bridges, improving dialogue, and promoting rapprochement between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, as well as between Turkish Cypriots and the European Union. In this context, reference is made to the 2004 decision of the Council of the European Union regarding the ending of the isolation of Turkish Cypriots. In this context, it is noted that civil society and private organizations, particularly those contributing to the socioeconomic development of Turkish Cypriots, especially young people, and to the strengthening of closer ties between Turkish Cypriots and the European Union, are consistent with the objectives set out in the aforementioned EU decision.
