Imanol Alguacil sent a message ahead of Olympiacos’s big derby against PAOK (Nov. 8, 9:00 p.m.), emphasizing the importance of passion and focus in such matches.
The Basque coach appeared satisfied with his team’s form, revealed that he has all his players available, and emphasized that the goal is to cap off an exceptional month for the “Red-and-Whites” with a victory.
Here’s what he said in detail:
On his team’s performance against Rennes: I believe there have been other games in which we played well. We played good soccer. It was an away game in the Europa League, at a stadium where it’s difficult to even create chances because the opponent is very strong. We managed to control the game. I believe we’re constantly improving. We didn’t manage to win, but I’m pleased with the performance of all the players. Now we want to wrap up this very good, wonderful month in the best possible way. And what could be better than a game against PAOK at home, in front of our fans? We want to head into the international break on a high note.
On whether he’s struggling to decide on the starting lineup against PAOK, given his satisfaction with those who played against Rennes: I always say this: it’s very important to have depth in the roster and for all the players to be available. We’re lucky because right now everyone really wants to play. There’s competition—healthy competition—and that’s good for the team. Whoever steps onto the field knows they have to give 100% to offer the best they can to the team and the club. This is excellent news. It’s not a headache for the coach. All of us coaches want to have all our players available.
Regarding the match against PAOK: Derbies are always tough. But we know we’re playing at home, and we want to finish this month on a high note. It’s been a great month, but we don’t want to stop now. You have to approach derbies with a clear head, but above all with passion and heart. That’s exactly what we’ll do. We’ll prepare as best we can, knowing that this is a derby. Our fans really want us to win these kinds of games, and so do our players. We’ll do everything we can.
As for whether everyone is available: As we’ve said before, when we’re getting good results, even if we’re playing every three days, the players recover very well. The truth is that right now, everyone is available. And as I said earlier, that’s the best news a coach can get.
