Monaco’s nightmare continues. After being relegated from the first and second divisions of the league due to serious financial problems, the 2026 French champion has suffered yet another major blow.
On Saturday, the executive committee of the French Basketball Federation decided not to approve Monaco’s participation in Nationale 1, the third-tier division of French basketball, following the negative recommendation of the Management Control Committee (CCG).
The CCG ruled that the club failed to submit documentation demonstrating with sufficient clarity the authenticity and reliability of its financial situation.
Thus, a club that just a few months ago was celebrating its third French championship in history has now found itself without a place in any national league, just a few days before the start of the Nationale 1 season.
The fall from grace is striking: Monaco was the French champion in 2023, 2024, and 2026, a EuroLeague finalist in 2025, and the EuroCup champion in 2021. Today, however, its future remains up in the air.
The nightmare for Monaco shows no sign of ending. And now, the Principality’s historic team is in danger of being sidelined from competition next season.
