Brighton held on tightly to their chance to advance, but City kept their cool!
In a thrilling match at the Etihad, Maresca’s team, after a 2-2 draw in regulation, sent Hurzeler’s team packing in the penalty shootout, securing a spot in the League Cup quarterfinals. The visitors took the lead through Yalkuig, but in the 40th minute, Kovacic equalized to make it 1-1. In the 47th minute, Ritter put Brighton back in front, but a goal by Rice in the 72nd minute sent the match to a penalty shootout, where the “Citizens” advanced with a 6-5 victory.
It was the same story in the “Anfield” derby, with Chelsea taking the lead against Liverpool in the 40th minute on a well-placed shot by Rodgers, but Hakpo, in the same fashion, tied the score at 1-1 three minutes later. The match then went into a nerve-wracking shootout, with the home team advancing 6–5 thanks to Fofana’s missed final kick.
A huge, dramatic victory for the incredible Bournemouth. The “Cherries” humiliated Aston Villa with a resounding 3-0 victory and advance to the quarterfinals thanks to goals by Adli in the 7th minute, Cook in the 51st minute, and Rodrigues in the 69th minute.
