Foreign media outlets are reporting that the captain of Cape Verde’s national team is accused of rape.
Specifically, allegations have been made against Ryan Mendes for raping the team’s translator during a trip the national team took to New Zealand last March.
She states that she had been hired for a trip to New Zealand for matches the team was scheduled to play there. After the first game against Chile, she was invited to attend a meeting.
During the meeting, she realized her presence wasn’t necessary, so she returned to her room.
Shortly afterward, however, as she reports, she heard knocking on her door, and when she opened it, Mendez entered the room, struck her, and raped her. In fact, she showed the authorities the bruises from those blows.
New Zealand police collected footage from the hotel’s security cameras and other evidence, which is being examined by local authorities; the results of this investigation are pending.
