Attempts to enter the free areas from the occupied areas with prohibited goods continue, with the Customs Department on high alert to deter anyone attempting to violate the Green Line Regulation.
Speaking on the issue during the Alpha Kalimera program, Customs Department Spokesperson Giorgos Konstantinou said that in one instance, a vehiclewas stopped at the Deryneia checkpoint, and an inspection revealed that the driver had attempted to bring 1,600 grams of yogurt and half a liter of ayran from the occupied areas into the free areas, in violation of the regulations.
In a second incident, a foreign national was found to have cigarettes from the occupied territories hidden in the sunroof of his vehicle.
Specifically, during an inspection of the vehicle, tobacco products were found carefully hidden in the vehicle’s sliding roof, whose packaging did not bear warnings about the dangers of smoking in Greek and Turkish, nor did it include the security feature or the unique traceability code, indicating that they were duty-free.
Specifically, a total of 9 cartons, each containing 200 cigarettes, and packages of tobacco for hand-rolled cigarettes weighing a total of 225 grams were found on the roof of the vehicle.
The driver was arrested on the spot for these offenses, while the tobacco products and the vehicle were seized. He was later released after his proposal for an out-of-court settlement of the offenses—and the return of the vehicle—was accepted upon payment of a total of €720.
