Chronology of the Attacks
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, unknown assailants carried out coordinated arson attacks using gas canisters, targeting New Democracy officials. The targets included the homes of the chairman of the New Democracy Thessaloniki Executive Committee, Zisis Ioakeimovich, former Member of Parliament Savvas Anastasiadis, and politician Afroditi Nestora.
According to reports, the perpetrators were riding motorcycles in all of the attacks.
The most serious of the three attacks occurred at 4:35 a.m. on Charilaou Street, where a fire—likely caused by a gas canister—spread to two cars and two motorcycles.
One of the vehicles belongs to Aphrodite Nestora. Aphrodite Nestora herself suffered minor burns to her limbs, while her father and two other residents of the apartment building were taken to the hospital with respiratory problems.
The New Democracy politician is also being treated at the Surgical Clinic, and the father and husband of the deceased, who have mild respiratory problems, are at the Pulmonology Clinic.
“The perpetrators will be treated as criminals”: Mitsotakis visited the victims of the bomb attack at the Hippocrates Hospital in Thessaloniki
Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent a message of zero tolerance for violence and assured that the perpetrators of the murderous attack will be brought to justice from the HippocratesState Hospital in Thessaloniki, where he visited the injured New Democracy officials and their families.
The prime minister described those responsible for the attack “mere criminals,” expressed his absolute confidence in the Greek Police and the judicial authorities, and made it clear that they would be tracked down and held accountable.
“Violence has no place in an organized society. Those who cloak themselves in the guise of social struggles to carry out such acts are nothing more than common criminals. They will be treated as such. I have absolute confidence in the Greek Police and the judicial authorities. “We will find those who committed this despicable act and bring them to justice so that they are held fully accountable,” he emphasized.
Earlier, Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the injured patients being treated at Hippocrates Hospital and was briefed by the doctors on their condition. At the same time, he thanked the medical and nursing staff for the care they are providing not only to the injured but also to Aphrodite Nestora and her parents.
“I want to thank the doctors and nursing staff at the Hippocrates Hospital for the treatment they provided to the injured, as well as for the care they are providing to Aphrodite Nestora, her mother, and her father. Unfortunately, her mother is in critical condition. We hope and pray that everything will turn out well,” the prime minister said.
Mitsotakis: Zero Tolerance for Terrorism
Earlier, Mr. Mitsotakis sent a clear message to the perpetrators of the deadly attack against the three party officials.
Speaking to New Democracy lawmakers on the sidelines of a presentation at the Bodossaki Foundation, the prime minister expressed his revulsion and outrage over the attack.
“I express my revulsion and outrage at this cowardly, murderous attack. Our thoughts are with Zisis, Savvas, and especially Afroditi, whose mother is fighting for her life,” he said.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that he would be leaving immediately for Thessaloniki to visit the injured, while also sending a stern message to those responsible.
“I will leave immediately for Thessaloniki to stand in solidarity with the injured and send a clear message: zero tolerance for any form of new terrorism. We will find you and bring you to justice,” he emphasized.
With his statement, the prime minister made it clear that the government will act with absolute determination to track down and punish the perpetrators, emphasizing that there is zero tolerance for acts of terrorist violence.
How the attacks took place
According to reports, investigators from the Hellenic Police believe that two perpetrators are behind the attacks, who, it appears, had planned every move in advance. It is believed, though not yet confirmed, that the perpetrators traveled by motorcycle and set off the gas canisters one after another.
At all three locations where the arson attacks took place, police found a gas canister and a small plastic container of gasoline. The most serious of the three occurred at 4:35 a.m. in Analipsi, where the perpetrators left the incendiary device under a car, causing it to catch fire and the flames to spread to nearby vehicles.
