"They strongly support the efforts of the UN Secretary-General, but firmly reject the notion that the Turkish Cypriot 'people and their children' should bear the cost of the lack of a solution,” said Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, stating that “we no longer want negotiations for the sake of negotiations or a 5+1-style meeting for the sake of the meeting.”

In his speech at the illegal “Bayrak,” which kicked off the celebrations in the occupied territories marking the anniversary of the illegal Turkish invasion, Tufan Erhurman said that, as Antonio Guterres also noted, “we want to be results-oriented” in order to achieve, as he put it, “a fair, lasting, and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem,” reiterating a similar position expressed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Mr. Erhurman also stated that the Turkish Cypriot “people” will not accept being ignored or disrespected, adding that they want a solution, but that this can only be achieved through a results-oriented process that will not lead to further disappointments.

He added that “our people will under no circumstances relinquish their rights, equality, and security,” while emphasizing that “under no circumstances will they accept being a minority” and “they will not consent to their children being isolated from the world.”

The Turkish Cypriot leader further asserted that there is a will for a solution, noting that “we don’t just want to appear to want a solution—we want a solution.” At the same time, he called for serious confidence-building measures and the establishment of procedural rules before negotiations begin, in order to avoid further disappointments.

In closing, he reiterated that the process is being conducted in consultation and full coordination with the Republic of Turkey.

Tufan Erhurman also met with Turkey’s Minister of National Defense, Yasar Güler, and his delegation, which is in the occupied territories for the events marking the anniversary of the Turkish invasion.

The meeting was attended by the leadership of the Turkish Armed Forces, as well as the commanders of the occupying military forces in the occupied territories. Mr. Güler also held talks with “Prime Minister” Unal Ustel, “Speaker of the House” Ziya Ozturkler, and members of the pseudo-state’s “government.”
