The Enduring Cypriot Political Culture

To what extent are the demands of the political forces supporting a government justified?

To what extent are the demands of the political forces supporting a government justified?

The third and final cabinet reshuffle was perhaps the most talked-about of all those carried out by Nikos Christodoulides during the three years and five months he has served as President of the Republic. For quite some time, we’ve been following intense behind-the-scenes activity, with information being exchanged back and forth about when it would take place and who would be appointed.

The reshuffling of the government lineup with which the President of the Republic will proceed until 2028 somewhat highlights the…familiar culture of Cypriot political life, from which no president—no matter how much he might wish to—can easily escape. This includes the dependence that may arise from the political parties that support him.

The Democratic Party, following what Nikolas Papadopoulos described as a “feat”—the result of the parliamentary elections— and as the only party with a parliamentary presence that is part of the coalition government, has climbed the presidential hill on more than a few occasions, making strong demands and claims regarding the new government structure. It even sought ministerial posts that, from 2023 to the present, have demonstrated a steady and successful track record, submitting lists to Nicos Christodoulides with specific names.

While the DIKO leadership’s demand to take the portfolios of the Ministries of the Interior and Finance may not have been accepted, it nevertheless managed to secure a strengthened role with a total of fourministerial posts in the Christodoulides government. And despite this outcome, the centrist party does not appear to be entirely satisfied with what it received from the President of the Republic.

DIKO’s stance of wanting to hold a strong position in the government it supports may, at first glance, be justified, as it is the party that contributed to Nikos Christodoulides’ rise to the presidency and rightfullyto have a role and a say at the President’s side. However, it also reveals the long-standing tendency of many local political forces to accumulate power and influence in a game of “give and take.”

This is where questions arise…

How far are the demands of the political forces supporting a government allowed to go?

Where does legitimate political cooperation end and political dependence begin?

Are cabinet reshuffles and any appointments made purely in the public interest, or with the aim of maintaining political balances that will lead to the presidential election?

These are questions to which…we’re unlikely to get answers in the country where we live.

*For now… I wish you all great swims and a wonderful summer!
