*Press Release

More than 100 metric tons of waste have been removed from Limassol neighborhoods in recent months as part of targeted cleanup campaigns carried out by the city’s municipality.

So far, 12 organized cleanup operations have been carried out in different areas of the city, and the total volume of waste collected amounts to 103.84 metric tons. Of this total, 55.93 metric tons consisted of bulky items, 30.33 metric tons of mixed waste, and 17.58 metric tons of tree trimmings.

The campaigns were not limited to waste collection. Municipal crews also carried out maintenance and painting work on urban infrastructure—including benches, trash cans, signs, and walls—with the aim of improving the appearance of public spaces.

The work carried out so far has covered Ekali, Katholiki, and the Tzami area, Epichosi, Neapoli, Omonia, the linear parks of Vathkeia in Mesa Geitonia and Garylli, as well as the areas of Agios Ioannis and Agios Nikolaos and the neighborhoods of Agios Spyridonas, Agia Fyla, and Kapsalos.

According to the Mayor of Limassol, the planning of these projects is based on an assessment of the specific needs of each area, and the work also makes use of the new cleaning equipment recently acquired by the Municipality.

It is worth noting that over the past two years, the Limassol Municipality’s expenditures on renewing its fleet of vehicles and cleaning equipment have also increased significantly, with the relevant budget reaching €5.6 million. So far, new street sweepers, garbage trucks, specialized vehicles, and a diagnostic machine for fault detection have been added to the fleet. More recently, the fleet was expanded to include electric walk-behind vacuum sweepers, vehicles equipped with autonomous high-pressure hot- and cold-water washers, and a beach cleaning machine.

The issue of cleanliness remains one of the key challenges for local government, particularly with regard to changing the culture the dumping of bulky items and other waste in public spaces. Organized campaigns are expected to continue beyond the summer season. New initiatives are planned starting in September, with the program set to expand to more neighborhoods in Limassol.
