She passed away yesterday, Sunday, September 6, Popi Christoforou, mother of twins Miltos and Christos Christoforou, who lost their lives in the deadly explosion on July 11, 2011, at the “Evangelos Florakis” naval base in Mari.
Poppy Christoforou, who had been battling cancer, came to be seen as the tragic figure of the mother who fought with tenacity and strength for justice for the 13 heroes of Mari.

The news of her death has cast a shadow of grief over the community, with citizens expressing their condolences in social media posts, while in a morning announcement, the Limassol Municipality expressed deep sorrow over her death.
As the statement notes, Popi Christoforou was “an iconic mother who transformed her unspeakable personal pain into a relentless quest for truth and justice.”
“Following the tragic loss of her two children, the twins Miltos and Christos, in the deadly explosion in Mari, on July 11, 2011, she stood with dignity and unparalleled strength of spirit, keeping their memory alive,” he adds, noting that “her presence and her approach to life have left a powerful mark on Cypriot society.”
In closing, the Mayor, the City Council, and the staff of the Limassol Municipality express their sincere condolences to her family and loved ones.
