Memories of the coronavirus pandemic were brought back following the World Health Organization’s recommendations to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is calling on citizens to practice social distancing and limit their travel due to the Ebola virus outbreak, which has been ongoing for months.
The outbreak has spread to six provinces and is responsible for 2,500 deaths and thousands of cases.
The World Health Organization’s Emergency Committee met to assess the course of the outbreak, with the relevant restrictions being the only viable option.
The recommendations include, among other things, postponing large gatherings, limiting the number of passengers on motorcycles, and strengthening health screenings. Authorities are also urged to investigate every death occurring outside of hospitals, since there is neither an approved vaccine nor a treatment for this specific strain of the virus.
All of this comes as the organization has asked the country’s authorities to facilitate the entry of international medical teams to bring in essential medical supplies.
From the Vatican, Pope Leo, addressing the crowd, prayed for the victims of the epidemic.
““I often think of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially because of the spread of the Ebola epidemic, which is unfortunately claiming many lives. I encourage a response from the international community—one that includes local communities in prevention efforts—so that as many human lives as possible may be saved.”
Pope Leo XIV
The spread of the disease has made this the deadliest outbreak ever recorded in this Central African country.
