A major search and rescue operation continues off the coast of Kyrenia following the capsizing and sinking of a catamaran carrying 267 people. According to the latest update from the occupying authorities, there are fatalities at the site of the shipwreck.
Specifically, in statements made during a live broadcast on TRT Haber, the so-called Prime Minister Ünal Ustel said that all search and rescue resources have been mobilized and that teams are continuingto carry out their operations. Ustel announced that there were casualties in the accident but did not provide further information on the number of people who lost their lives.
Turkey’s “Ambassador” to Nicosia, Ali Murat Başçeri, also stated during a live broadcast on TRT Haber that there were fatalities in the passenger ship accident off the coast of Kyrenia. Başçeri stated that rescue efforts are ongoing, but no official information has yet been provided by the relevant authorities regarding the number of fatalities, the condition of the injured, or the identities of the victims.
A 17-year-old, Deniz Ozpolat, managed to escape from the sinking boat and spoke on camera to Turkish Cypriot media about what he experienced during the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, the occupying authorities’ large-scale search and rescue operation continues, while hospitals in the occupied territories have been placed on alert to receive those rescued from the sea.
The “Minister of Public Works and Transportation,” Erhan Arıklı, had stated earlier that the “Filo Shipping,” which was sailing off the coast of Kyrenia, had a total of 267 people on board, including 259 passengers and 8 crew members. It was approximately 4 miles off the coast when it capsized.
