The Road to the Presidency Is an Uphill Battle: Political Parties Are Gearing Up for the Big Showdown

Political parties are gearing up for the elections and sounding out potential candidates
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Political parties and potential candidates are gearing up for the presidential election race, with the process heating up. AKEL will make its decision by spring; as its leadership admits, they are holding talks with many parties.

ARISTOS DAMIANOU—AKEL Member of Parliament: “By
March 2027, we will be ready to propose a candidate to the public.”

Discussions among the party’s grassroots groups are beginning at Ezekia Papaioannou. The party is counting on the support of the ALMA movement, and possibly also the Greens and VOLT, which is heading toward internal party elections.  The Central Committee will convene to prepare a final proposal for the electoral convention, which will decide on the candidate. Discussions are underway with Andreas Mavrogiannis, though nothing has been finalized yet.

By the end of the year, we will also know Pindarou’s candidate, as all members will vote for their chosen candidate. The race currently involves three candidates: Anita Dimitriou, Averof Neophytou, and George Pamporidis, each waging their own campaign.

Discussions are underway between the current and former presidents, with the latter linking the election campaign to the Cyprus issue. Former MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis appears to be aligned with Averof’s stance, calling on all political forces to await the outcome of the new effort on the national issue and to begin discussions on the presidential election after the 2027 elections in Greece.

Following the cabinet reshuffle, DIKO appears even more satisfied with Nicos Christodoulides, though it does not rule out running its own candidate or selecting another candidate.

CHRYSSIS PANTELIDIS—
DIKO Member of Parliament: “DIKO is part of the coalition government and is committed to being as productive as possible in governing as part of this mission.”

Christiana Erotokritou, however, makes no secret of her interest in public office.

CHRISTIANA EROTOKRITOU—DIKO Deputy Chairperson: “With
humility and respect. If my fellow candidates deem that I am capable of fulfilling this role, I will discuss it.”

Nikolas Papadopoulos and Marios Karoyan met a few days ago, as reported by REPORTER. The possibility of a co-presidency between the two leaders was discussed, either within DIKO or within a new political platform.  Sources within DIPA indicate that a potential alliance could gain traction depending on the choice the two parties make in the presidential election. If they choose the same candidate, then the path forward may open up more easily.

The disappointment within EDEK regarding the Presidency following the reshuffle does not mean that the party’s new president will leave the government.

SOFIA CHRISTODOULOU MAKRI—EDEK Chair: “Relationships are
being redefined. For me, as Sofia, it’s important to see what I can contribute, not only to the Cabinet but also politically.”

ELAM has not yet entered into advanced discussions.
