The fugitive who had escaped from the Lakatamia police detention center, setting off an alarm among law enforcement authorities, has been located and arrested.
According to initial reports, the 19-year-old man from Syros was located in Limassol.
In a statement, the police reported that his arrest was the result of the force’s immediate mobilization, systematic investigation, and operational efforts.
Police officers worked with professionalism and perseverance to locate and arrest him, the statement emphasizes, though the Force acknowledges that “the successful outcome of the operation does not negate the fact that it was preceded by an escape, which must be assessed seriously and without sugarcoating.”
“The security of detention does not depend solely on the effort and conscientiousness of the staff. It requires appropriate and secure facilities, sufficient and properly trained staff, clear procedures, as well as effective and systematic checks—especially when there is overcrowding! For this reason, in addition to investigating the circumstances of this specific escape, existing detention and security procedures will be comprehensively evaluated so that, where weaknesses are identified, corrective measures can be taken immediately. Success is not just about effectively responding to an incident when it occurs. It is, first and foremost, about creating the conditions to prevent it. That is our main goal!” the statement concludes.
