“It’s too early for an election campaign,” says President Christodoulides

Now “we must provide solutions to the issues that concern citizens”

Seventeen to eighteen months from now is too early to begin the pre-election debate for 2028, said President Nikos Christodoulides as he arrived at the Cyprus Forum 2026, when asked to comment on the situation that has developed within DISY following Averof Neophytou’s announcement that he will be a candidate in the next presidential election.

Nikos Christodoulides said that he does not dispute the right of any of our fellow citizens or any political faction to launch a campaign; however, “it is September 2026, the presidential election is in February 2028, and in other parliamentary democracies, this period represents roughly half the term of the current administration.”

“We face extremely serious challenges, and the executive branch, in cooperation with the legislative branch, must provide solutions to the issues that concern citizens,” he concluded.
