The historic city hall in Limoges, France, is considered to be almost completely destroyed after it was set ablaze during the violent protests that swept the country.

The city’s mayor and the prefect estimate that the building has sustained such extensive damage that a large portion of it is now considered lost.

“The roof collapsed on the lower floors, with the exception of the west wing, while two-thirds of the facade has already been destroyed,” Prefect Maurice Barrat told the French Press Agency, referring to it as a “catastrophe for cultural heritage.”

At the same time, he spoke of arson committed by individuals seeking to cause destruction.

According to him, elected officials, municipal police officers, and city employees were inside the building when the fire broke out. None of them were injured.

The mayor of Limoges, Guillaume Guérin, visibly moved, stated that the fire continued to spread, while strong winds were complicating the situation. He added that the town hall’s bell tower had also collapsed.

The building was inaugurated in 1883 and is a prime example of the architecture of that era, with a design inspired by the Paris City Hall. Hundreds of people watched with anger and disappointment as the flames destroyed the historic building.
