Vangelis Liolios, just as he was appearing before the investigating judge to answer for the charges against him in the Greek basketball scandal, took a step of his own.
The president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) informed the Greek authorities that he is putting a halt to any involvement with Greek basketball until the situation regarding the scandal is clarified and the legal proceedings are concluded. In his statement to the investigating magistrate’s office, Mr. Liolios emphasized that he is stepping down so that basketball—and specifically the Federation he has led for the past five years—can continue to function.
Essentially, this move—even if only temporary—paves the way for the election of a new president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), as the Federation is now… leaderless, with its strongman having stepped down from his duties after, of course, being arrested and brought to justice.
