In his regular Sunday address, Kyriakos Mitsotakis assured the public that the government would not turn a blind eye to any corruption in sports. Following revelations of match-fixing in basketball, the Greek prime minister made it clear that he wants athletes and children to be treated fairly.
“Corruption in sports primarily undermines the efforts of athletes and the belief of children that hard work and talent are rewarded fairly. It will not be tolerated by our government. No arrest is equivalent to a conviction. Unimpeded investigations, however, even when they involve individuals with financial or institutional power, are an essential prerequisite for a state that seeks to earn the trust of its citizens. It is our duty to strengthen oversight mechanisms and ensure that they can do their work without exception. And of course, if necessary, the government will do whatever is required to support workers affected by these developments. I know that trust is hard to build. It requires consistency and results, every single day. From protecting a child against digital giants to enforcing the law against those who believe they are above scrutiny. That is where the usefulness of politics is judged. And we continue to act according to this criterion,” he said.
