Message from the greek prime minister addressed to turkey
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The Greek Prime Minister is focusing on the agreement regarding the Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai and the resumption of negotiations between Greeceand Egypt on the delimitation of the remaining portion of the EEZ, linking the two developments to the strategic relationship between Athens and Cairo while also sending a message against “revisionist claims” in the region.

Mr. Mitsotakis describes the agreement between the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine and Egypt as a “development of historic significance,” noting that for the first time, through a specific and legally binding document, the religious character and monastic way of life of the Monastery are enshrined in perpetuity, as well as the exclusive use and possession of the places of worship by its sisterhood, guaranteed by the Egyptian side and without the possibility of altering the places of worship.

As he notes, the agreement resolves a 1,500-year-old institutional issue, while he points out that the Greek government worked “with persistence and discretion,” in cooperation with Egypt and with respect for the monastery’s autonomy. He makes special mention of the consensus reached by the Ecumenical Patriarch, the Patriarchs of Alexandria and Jerusalem, and the Archbishops of Athens and Cyprus, which he describes as “a strong message of unity and responsibility from the Greek Orthodox world.”

The Greek Prime Minister also strongly emphasizes the resumption of negotiations between Greece and Egypt on the delimitation of the remaining portion of their shared Exclusive Economic Zone, following the 2020 agreement.

As Mr. Mitsotakis notes, the agreement on the Monastery of Sinai and the resumption of talks on the EEZ confirm “the depth of a relationship built on trust, with tangible results for our country.”

“In the face of revisionist claims by our neighbors that lack any basis in international law, we respond with strong alliances in the Arab world, through dialogue, and through legally binding agreements that safeguard our national interests,” he states.
