Yiannis Vroutsis hinted that simply replacing the president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee (EOK) will not restore the sport’s tarnished credibility following the revelations about the scandal involving matches that are alleged to have been rigged.
“Unfortunately, a deep and painful wound has been opened. What is happening in basketball is toxic, and we all have a duty to work together to restore credibility,” the Minister of Sports emphasized.
“All federations operate autonomously. I have issued instructions requesting audits by the Ministry of Finance and the Transparency Authority. Light will be shed on the Hellenic Olympic Committee’s finances. I’ve cut off funding to the federation. Autonomy is… autonomy, but the state is… the state, and it has the tools—such as financial audits and funding flows to the federation—to do whatever is necessary to get us where we need to go. “It is our right to use the resources we want in the direction we want,” he added, announcing that he would comment further after his meeting at noon with the new EOK administration.
“What needs to change is the restoration of prestige and credibility. Rest assured that the government will do what needs to be done. We want the league and all professional and amateur sports competitions to continue smoothly. Why should a league be suspended? We will all work together to ensure it continues as normal. “There is a heavy atmosphere; credibility has been lost, and the government is stepping in to restore prestige and credibility,” he concluded.
