Severe weather from Greece “hits” Cyprus: When are the most intense conditions expected?

Temperatures are plummeting; the meteorological service is expected to issue warnings
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The weather is gradually changing, with the Meteorological Service warning of severe weather conditions on the horizon, due to a low-pressure system affecting Greece and moving toward our region.

According to statements made by the Meteorological Service’s Press Spokesperson, Andreas Chrysanthou, on the Alpha Kalimera show, we can expect some light rain today; however, starting tomorrow, we will see isolated showers with a possibility of thunderstorms, mainly in the north, inland, and in the east.

The bulk of the precipitation will arrive on Wednesday—and especially on Thursday—two very important days for the forecast.

“We will have intermittent local showers, with isolated thunderstorms. On Thursday, the weather will be intense or even prolonged. Relevant warnings will be issued to the public in a timely manner. Through Thursday and Friday, we’ll see a noticeable drop in temperature, on the order of 5–6 degrees Celsius. This means that temperatures will be well below seasonal averages, especially through Friday. This pattern will continue through next Monday—that is, Friday and the weekend—and we’ll see intermittent rain and isolated thunderstorms.”

While Mr. Chrysanthou warns that Wednesday and Thursday will be two days with significant weather events, the bulk of the phenomena—which will be intense and prolonged—is expected on Thursday.

“This is an isolated low-pressure system affecting Greece. This low-pressure system will move toward our region, bringing these weather events. Right now, it is causing quite intense weather in many areas across Greece.”

Detailed forecast from the Meteorological Service

A low-pressure system is beginning to affect the region. Sparse dust may be suspended in the atmosphere at times.

Today, the weather will be partly cloudy and, at times, mostly cloudy, while isolated, mostly light, showers are possible. Winds will initially blow mainly from the northwest to the northeast at light speeds, 3 Beaufort, before shifting later to mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, light and occasionally moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will rise to around 29 degrees inland, along the southern and eastern coasts, around 25 degrees along the western and northern coasts, and 20 degrees in the higher mountainous areas.

Tonight, the weather will be partly cloudy and, at times, mostly cloudy. Winds will be mainly westerly to northwesterly, light and occasionally locally moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will drop to around 17 degrees inland and along the coast, and to 12 degrees in the higher mountainous areas.

On Tuesday, the weather will be partly cloudy, with isolated showers or thunderstorms expected mainly in the afternoon. On Wednesday and Thursday, the weather will be mostly cloudy, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms expected at times. On Thursday, these weather phenomena may be intense in some areas.

Temperatures will gradually drop significantly, falling below average seasonal values.
