The reasoning behind Vangelis Liolios’s pretrial detention cites serious evidence of his guilt, describing him as a person who acted without any hesitation and in his dual capacity asof the EOK and, in essence, as the boss of Prometheus.
As the warrant specifically states, “based on witness testimony, the documents, and the reports that have been gathered, in conjunction with the defendant’s statement, there is strong evidence of his guilt regarding the aforementioned acts of which he is accused, committed on a continuous basis, and the defendant’s defense arguments, which he presented during his statement, are not deemed convincing
, at least at this stage of the proceedings. Based on the specific and distinctive characteristics of the defendant’s acts, as evidenced by the case file and, in particular, by the exceptional reprehensibility of the alleged offenses, namely, the commission of the acts attributed to him, specifically the repeated offering and promise to provide an arbitrator or administrative official with gifts, benefits, and other favors (including promotion to the position of referee as well as monetary payments) with the intent to influence and alter the outcome of basketball games, including matches featured in betting events, as well as matches in the Panhellenic Boys’ Championship, the Junior Championship, and the Panhellenic School Championship—a purpose that was achieved, as well as the act of intervening through improper actions with the intent to influence the outcomes of basketball games, acting both in his capacity as president of the PROMETHEUS PATRAS Basketball Club and as the de facto president of the aforementioned team, and while, at the time of the individual acts, he also held the institutional position of president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), acting in concert with his co-defendants on a continuous basis, without any hesitation and for petty reasons, through institutional and extra-institutional channels of influence he maintained with referees, he must be placed in pretrial detention, since, if released, it is highly likely that he will commit further crimes, and the imposition of any restrictive condition on him would not be sufficient to deter him from committing new crimes, taking into account in particular:
a) his persistent activity over time in this specific field through specific individuals in his circle, including active referees, with the aim of unlawfully influencing the outcome of matches, and
b) the fact that the defendant continues to maintain numerous acquaintances and contacts with virtually all key figures in the basketball community.”
