“The forest is not a dumping ground”: Shameful scenes at the Platanion campground, final warning from the Forestry Department

Call for the remaining visitors to leave

Shocking scenes have been documented at the Platania campground, where trash and abandoned items remain on the premises, one year after the decision to close it was made.

Journalist Eleni Fanari conducted an on-site investigation with an Alpha TV camera.

A year ago, the decision was made to close this specific campground; however, some RVs still remain there. At the same time, many inconsiderate visitors leave trash behind, showing no regard for the environment or cleanliness.

When asked to comment on the issue, Glafkos Kyriakou, Press Spokesperson for the Forestry Department, he noted that a year ago, the process of removing campers began so that renovation work could start.

According to him, when certain visitors leave, they are observed to abandon various items and materials on the premises, such as sofas, refrigerators, toiletries, household appliances, and other recyclable materials.

As he notes, the Forestry Department is gradually removing the trash to clean up the area; however, he emphasizes that, “the forest is not a dumping ground but a public natural resource that belongs to everyone, and we must respect it.”

Some campers remain at the site, even though, according to the Forestry Department’s notice, they were supposed to have left by October 15. Mr. Kyriakou appealed to those remaining to leave the area, emphasizing that this is the final notice.

“We call on all remaining campers to remove their belongings and leave the site clean.”

He noted that the Forestry Department is coordinating with the Legal Service to ensure the process proceeds in a proper and lawful manner. He made it clear that the Forestry Department does not intend to change its plans and that all campers must vacate the site. If they fail to comply, they will face the penalties prescribed by law.

“They must vacate the premises within one month; otherwise, we will proceed in accordance with the law.”
