Maria Sakkari’s run at the Tokyo tournament (WTA 500) came to an early end. The 31-year-old Greek tennis player lost to Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 after a two-and-a-half-hour battle.
Sakkari, who yesterday climbed to No. 30 in the world rankings, took a 2-0 lead in the first set, but couldn’t maintain her momentum and lost it 6-4. In the second set, she fought back and evened the match at 6-3, but in the third set everything went wrong, and the 31-year-old Kazakh (No. 67) dominated 6-1, setting up a round of 16 matchup with world No. 1 Elena Rybakina.
Sakkari’s next and final stop for this season is the Hong Kong tournament (Nov. 2–8).
