The EOK elections for a new administration—following the resignation of Vangelis Liolios and the transitional period under President Angelos Papanikolaou—are now underway, following a meeting held yesterday between Deputy Minister of Sports Yiannis Vroutsis and the federation’s board of directors.
All signs point to the elections taking place in December, with two leading dates: Sundays, December 13 and 20. The exact date is expected to be finalized in the coming days.
In the meantime, the current administration will continue to run the federation, ensuring the uninterrupted continuation of all leagues, as well as the crucial games scheduled for the men’s and women’s national teams in November for the World Cup and EuroBasket qualifiers, respectively.
As for who will run for president, there is still no clear answer. It is said that Panagiotis Fasoulas is likely to run again, while it is also possible that Giannis Bourousis—who was a member of the board until a few months ago, having been elected in 2024 on Fasoulas’s ticket—will run for the first time. It is also possible that Angelos Papanikolaou, who ran for president in 2021, will run as well.
The “landscape” for the candidates, as they won’t have much time to run their campaigns aimed at convincing the clubs—which make up the electorate and number nearly 900! It will also be interesting to see which candidates the major teams will support (if they choose to do so).
