"In favor of 'bold confidence-building measures,'" said President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides as he departed the Presidential Palace for his upcoming meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. Today, Christodoulides and Erhurman will also hold consecutive half-hour meetings with members of the Bi-communal Technical Committees on Cultural Heritage and Youth, as well as with the Coordinating Council of Civil Society.
President Christodoulides explained that, in light of the upcoming visit by the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Olguín, responses are expected from the Turkish Cypriot side regarding the 19 new proposals submitted by the Greek Cypriot side, including the return of the enclosed town of Varosha to its lawful residents, with the simultaneous operation of the port of Famagusta for direct trade.
“I believe this is a mutually beneficial proposal that creates positive conditions for both sides, and it is also something that will put us all to the test in practice, if we truly mean that we want to move forward.”
At the same time, the President of the Republic announced a new proposal that he intends to submit as a “third or fourth alternative to achieve a positive outcome.”
Mr. Christodoulides noted that he seeks to have the proposal he submitted to Guterres and Olgin during their recent meetings in New Yorkand on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly, regarding the issue of methodology, both in terms of confidence-building measures and the resumption of dialogue.
“Let’s hope we’ll see positive results”
