The liberation and reunification of our homeland are our top priority, said Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou, on Sunday at the national memorial service for the residents of Trachoni, Kythrea, who were killed in cold blood during the Turkish invasion of 1974.
“We honor the missing, the displaced, the captives, the victims, and those trapped—all those who continue to suffer from the horrors of the barbaric Turkish invasion and the ongoing occupation,” said Mr. Antoniou as he delivered the memorial address at the Church of St. Andrew in Platy, Aglantzia.
As he said, “Ending the occupation, liberating, and reunifying our homeland is our top priority. Despite the difficulties, obstacles, and challenges, we remain committed to the major effort to resume negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem, based on the agreed framework, with respect for the negotiating acquis, the principles, values, and law of the European Union.”
He noted that “in the face of Turkey’s ongoing crime, our response is clear: We will never accept or legitimize the fait accompli of the illegal invasion. And of course, we will not abandon our efforts, because inaction plays into Turkey’s narrative that there are two states and that a solution based on the agreed framework cannot be achieved.”
“We remain realistic and know that the road ahead is difficult; however, our historical duty demands perseverance and dedication to the ultimate goal of breaking free from the shackles of occupation through the liberation and reunification of our homeland,” he said.
“Our vision is for the Republic of Cyprus to evolve into a state that is truly free throughout its entire territory, without an occupying army and without guarantor powers with unilateral intervention rights,” Mr. Antoniou noted.
